I bought a 1949 Super AV and last Saturday, 11/8, it was delievered. The motor is stuck, besides a missing distributer, and some caps, it is complete. It has been sitting since Saturday afternoon with Marvel Mystery oil in the cylinders, and on the valves(4 have returned completely up so far), and some PB Blaster, as well as kerosene as of yesterday. The motor won't budge when it is rocked in gear. I tried dragging it in 4th gear with the truck yesterday and today for a little while and the wheels counter rotate-one turns forward and the other turns backwards. Where do I go from here to get the motor unstuck? I don't really want to start investing in it until it is unstuck. Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

THis may be to late but it is cold today so I came inside!!. If you have PB blaster in the cylinders then get boiling water into the water jacket and it will help the penetrant get around the pistons. DON'T put boiling water in a stone cold engine but put some hot water in it, let it warm to that, drain, then put some hotter water in and let it warm to that, then some hotter-hotter water in it and let it warm to that, THEN put the boiling water in it and let it set a spell. If it is stuck with major rust and does come loose enough to turn over, you may get to hear it run enough to urge you on but most likely it will need some teardown anyway. Heat helps a lot.

I have freed up three engines that were stuck pretty bad in the last month. After using PB in the cyl. I had a buddy get under tractor with a pry bar on the fly wheel and using 12 volt batt. bumped starter and pryed at same time. If it will move slightly then reverse direction with pry bar. Back and forth and soon had the starter roll it all the way over. If that don't work remove head and use block of hard wood and hamer on each piston. LOL Bill

Tom, I have had good luck two ways, with the head on jack up one rear wheel and rock it back and foward in high gear. With head off spray a little bit of PB Blaster around outside edge of the piston. Cut a 8" stick from a broom handle and tap around edge of piston till you see oil splashing out between the piston and sleeve. (If you can try to hit it at a small angle to the outside of the piston.) You don't have to hit it hard, just tap it. (You will want to wear a good pair of gloves just in case the stick splinters!) As already said, if it is stuck from water in the exhaust you will normally have to rebuild it.

I forgot to ask on my previous post ? Was the exhaust open to the atmosphere when you got the tractor ? If it was it probably filled with water causing rust and corrosion that any type of liquid overhaul will not cure, If the exhaust was open to rain etc, it would be best to tear it down and overhaul it, It is expensive but in the end you will have the piece of mind that you have a good tractor that will run another 50 years beffore it needs internal engine work.Even if you get it freed up , there is a good possibility that oil control rings are stuck, and or compression rings, which may cause loss of power or cause it to burn oil and smoke. But once again it is hard to say what it looks like inside,I would still work at getting it freed up , and if you get it running and there is no white smoke and it seems to run well leave it alone, but if you cant get it loose I thingk that an overhaul is your best bet to a good running machine.

I can't add anything to the Pros., because they are the best, but if you don't have any luck with it, I have an extra engine for it. I have unstuck them by putting oil in the cylinders and pulling them, and also had some that wouldn't budge regardless of what I did and had to tear them apart. Good luck with yours.

Tkae the head off and drop the pan you will have to do this anyway as the engine is no good if it is stuck that bad. You will have to buy some new parts sleeves and pistons are 309 increased bore to 3 1/8 making it a 123cu in they even have a discount till DEC. E-MAIL for more info.

I think you are using the right methods to try and free the engine. I have an (a) that I had the same problem with a couple of years ago, and weather or not the methods you are using will work depends on how bad of shap the engine is internally. I was not able to get mine to free up , so ended up tearing down and doing a complete overhaul on it, after getting it apart I had to drive the pistons out with a sledge hammer. I also found a cracked block , so in the end it was best for me to tear it down. You can get a complet rebuild kit, liners, pistons , rings, rod and main bearings, and gasket set for under 500.00. good luck.

I had the same problems as you have with a JD-B and I put turpentine on top of the oil I had in it and in 2 hours it came loose. That was after I pulled it with my other tractor and the wheels did the same thing as your are doing. Pull the plugs blow a little of the oil out and fill them with turpentine and let it sit for a day or so, then give it a try. I has always worked for me. hope this helps
