I need your help. I made a mistake and bought a tractor off of Ebay. It was posted as a Super M, but when the tractor arrived here (after $1200.00 in shipping costs)it is a M with Super M decals, and maybe an engine that has had a Super M kit installed. What's the difference in value between a M and a SM?

There is a considerable difference between the two! I own both: 2-M's 1950-51 & 1-SM 1953. The disc brakes & battery position are correctly stated. As for the tractors themselves the SM is more power from IH. SM horsepower (264 cid engine) Belt/PTO = 43.9, Drawbar = 37.1, pulling weight 5676 lbs & the weight of the trator itself 8929 lbs. The M horsepower (248 cid engine) Belt/PTO = 34.2, Drawbar = 25.5, pulling weight 4233 lbs & tractor weight 6770 lbs. As far as ebay there is a ASK SELLER QUESTIONS BUTTON IN THE RIGHT CORNER. Shipping oh well. Hope this info helps. Either tractor in good working order & depending on your needs are worth owning!

I recently bought a truck off ebay. I doubt I will ever buy another large item off ebay. I did not get hurt very bad, but, as they say the devil is in the details, and it is easy to hide things in pictures. Not saying there are not good deals there, but the risk is greater in my opinion. I did have the chance to walk away from the deal and didn't so I cannot complain too much. My experience was with a dealer selling his tradeins on ebay. I drove 150 + miles with a certified check, and the transaction should have took 20 minutes and ended up taking 2 1/2 hours waiting on this person, and then another to do senseless paperwork. Even then it was 2 weeks later before I received the title to the truck. To make matters worse the truck turned out to need quite a bit more work than described. But as I said I had the chance to walk and didn't.

Other than the engine and brakes, the big difference is the faster 3rd and 4th speeds in the transmission. 4th is nearly 7 mph, as opposed to 5+ and 3rd is 5 as opposed to 4 1/8 or so. Also the choke rod attaches to the carb on the block side on the SM, rather than the outside as on the M.

The guy that sold the tractor admits it's a M not a Super M as listed. He thought the only difference was the engine and had that rebuilt with SM parts. Batt is mnted under the fuel tank, serial number says it,s a M. It was shipped 1400 miles. The tractor is in good condition, but it's still a M not a SM.

That's too bad. Report his sorry a$$ to ebay(negative feedback & get in touch with Ebay managers) & maybe talk to a lawyer?? the guy could've checked the serial number easy enough. Saw a thing on the news tonight about a couple frauds on ebay getting in legal trouble.

the very early SM's didnt even have disc brakes in the Stage I. You would have to look at the serial tag and it should say SM. Also it should have a C264 engine. You still might have a Super M

All Super M's had disk brakes. My 52 M has them. It is onlt 130 s/n's from the last M made. Some early Supers 53's had the battery box under the tanks.

Yes they did. In fact the very late M's had the same disk brakes as the Super M, as opposed to the optional M disk brakes. The possible exception is that IH did some wierd things during the transition from one model to the next, so if it was a Friday, or maybe a Monday---who knows?

There is no "M" prefix. If it is gas it either says FBK (M), SM (Super M) or SM-TA for Super MTA. Perhaps your S is worn off. Diesels say FDBK, SMD, etc.

Diesel. What year SM did not have disc brakes, worked on a good many of them never saw a SM with out disc brakes. Don't get the late M's mixed out with the SM cause the last M's were almost SM's with disc brakes but not same as the IH disc brakes.

All Super M's had disk brakes and the 264 engine. I have seen a straight M with disk brakes, don't know if they were aftermarket or what. The stage II Super M's had live hydraulics, IE battery under the seat.

My 52 M has Disk brakes, and the faster rear-end. The brakes are original IH. I bought super M brake disc for it when I rebuilt it. And Yes it also has the 264 engine. It only likes about 130 s/n's being the last M.

It would depend quite a lot on the overall condition of the tractors in question. A straight M in excellent condition would potentially be worth more than a super M in poor condition, but in any event, you got took. Next time, ask for the serial number, and the casting codes.
As for the $1200 dollar shipping fee, how far away was this tractor?
