Well I went and did it bought that F 12 I was asking about. So now I have a few questions.
1 where are the numbers on it so I can find out year etc ?
2 Where there many made with just a single front wheel about a foot wide?
3 How many gears doe it have, I found 3 forward I think?
4 How does the timing thing work on it, I was told it has a lever that sets it for starting and running which way for both? Thanks for any help

Congrats, I have 2 F-12's 4unning an F-14 in the shop and another F-12 to be restored. I love every one of them.

One word of caution. Before you ever turn the gas on, crank the engine over and make sure the impulse on the mag is working. Even if you have the timing set properly, if the impulse isn't working it can get you.

Have a safe and happy time with the new tractor.

I just finished a 1934 F-12. Did a ground up restoration. Not entirely factory stock but I did my best to make her pretty. If you'd like a complete cost database, as well as a vendor listing, AND a CD with pictures from the time I bought it all the way up to the day she rolled out of the garage, shoot me an email and we'll settle the details. Well at this point I'll probably put it in my machine shed and fill it up with oil, the engine is stuck. I have a JD-B in the shop right now so I guess I'll finish it up, it has already been painted and decals put on but has set for about 15 years so I'm haveing to do a lot to get it running again. Once its goes pop,pop I'll probably put the F12 where the deere is and get it running. I like to hear them run before I start on the body work etc. I guess you can say hearing one run makes me want to make it look as good as it sounds. But when I get that far I'll post back up for info on what it should look like. I got this F12 cheap or at least I think so hows $300 sound for a complete F12. It even has the single the old man that got it new put on the mag to keep the water out. Thanks for the input

Congratz I would recomend buying owner and parts manuals, you can get them through this site or others. I bought mine from binder books. I would buy some of Guy Fay's books on Farmalls. I would also pic up a copy of the Photo book, I find I use this one alot. I use an old fore-arm protector from my high school football days when I atempt to crank mine over, and keep the thumb in. I also made copies of my manuals and put them in protective sheets in a 3 ring binder ( idea stole from Roger Welsch) . I always seam to have greasy fingers when I need to look something up. Have Fun

1:The tag should be riveted to the front gas tank support,it is also located on a flat spot just in frnot of the fuel pump on the engine.
2:Dont know,my book doesnt show that.
3:Three foward and one reverse. There was an aftermarket road gear for these, but I dont know anything about those.
4:The lever is located near yourright foot as if you were sitting on it.It moves left to right with the farthest point left being off and farthest right being advanced.WHere you start it will depend on the tractor itself.I have one that that starts easiest about half way and another that starts better just off off and I have seen them be almost full advance, but I think that one was out of time a little. As mentioned, dont start it with full advance. You may get lucky and start it a few times like that but one of these days it will get you,and make sure you do it yourself, dont trust the word of a buddy standing there,he may not know what hes talking about.(Wont go into how I know that, but lets say I have scars from where my bone came throguh my arm)

5:(You didnt have a number five)Enjoy the heck out of it!

Congrats on your new purchase!
Even though I have one I don't know alot about them. Mine does have 3 forward gears, and the timing advance is on the front of the mag. all the way up is to shut it off, about half way to start and all the way down to run. Carefull cranking it, they sometimes kick back. My crank flew off and hit me in the head. So I made an adaptor for a 14" pully and allways rope start mine. Much safer! and it only cost a few bucks.
Good luck with your new purchase!

Numbers are on a data plate rivited to the gas tank support, and also on the engine block, on a flat boss.
The single front wheel is not as common, but many were made.
3 forward gears, slow, slower, and much slower. One reverse.
The spark lever is for setting the timing for starting, and is also the shutoff. All the way up is off, down a little bit for starting, all the way down for running. DO NOT try to crank with the spark advanced, or it will kick back and break something, and it won't be the tractor. If there is any doubt as to it being timed correctly, I would reccomend towing or pushing it to start the first time. Then you can play with the spark lever and see just how it works. In fact, I never crank an engine I have not had running first, to verify the timing is correct. I had a F20 kick back at the fair one year, and I was lucky I didn;t break my wrist. It was sore for a month.

If it's an early model, the SN plate is on the hood itself.
