Does anyone know the lift and base circle figures for the stock camshaft in an H ? If not, how about measuring yours and letting me know what you get.

My cam measures ~1.335" perpendicular to the lobes and ~1.535" along the lobes. That gives about 0.20" of lift.

Only one camshaft is shown in my parts book, and the IH Service Manual (a reprint of CHS-69) lists the tappet lift as .344". This cam does not look that worn (all the lobes are +/- 0.004"), am I figuring this wrong ?

Thanks

Greg

Greg, I just took out the cam on my H last night, so I measured mine. It measures 1.507 and 1.375, so mine is a little different. I think you have to measure the lift by rotating in on centers as measuring across may be measuring some of the ramp as one of the others said. Roger

Roger,

Thanks for checking. I have since taken my cam to Berry Cams in Lester Prairie and talked to Scott there. He said that there are actually 3 cams that were used in H motors. The most common (90%) is casting number 43962DB which is known as the low lift cam. It has .207 lift. The other two are 43962DC at .240 and 45956D which had .270. He said that the high lift cams were very rare.

You are right that the cams should be measured on V blocks or between centers, but I just miked mine. The duration, measured on the cam, is between 116 and 108 degrees, so the error with such little lift is only a few thousandths at most.

It sounds like you might need a new cam or to have yours reground. Berry Cams (320-395-2377) charges about $125 to regrind to .240 (less for standard ~$100?) and about $25 to reface the lifters.

Good luck on your project.

Greg

Measuring perpendiculat to the lobe you may be measuring the ramps which will account what appears to be base circle being to large.

Riverbend, I have never owned an H or even worked on one, but by reading your post I dont believe that you have any problem. Lobes dont appear to be worn and are consistent with the others within .004, I assune your measuring this with cam journals resting in V blocks and using .001 dial indicator on surface plate. My best quess is that your specs are for another motor or they are measuring lobe lift differently. Hopefully others can give you more info.
