Confused on paint schemes

I thought I remember being told once that farmalls were painted grey prior to 1936, then when I look at photo ads and tractor photos on this message board I see 1934's and 35's paitned red, and 1938's paitned grey. Am I mistaken or are these tractors just painted wrong? Also, how do you tell what colour a tractor should be, for example my 1933 F-12?? Sorry for the lengthy post...thanks for all responses.

It is common to see 36 and earlier tractors painted red, but this was not a factory thing, it was a repaint, either at the dealer, or on the farm. When I was a teenager in the 60s my cousin took their 10-20 to school for a repaint. He painted it red. It was red when they got it. I recently saw a f12 on the photo ads that was painted grey, but looked to me like a f14, with the raised steering, solid front wheels with removeable front rims. I guess some folks paint them the color they like.

Hey there Bill, that 34' you saw was mine. It is, in fact, an F-12 with the F-14 upgrade done at a later point. The front wheels are not original to the tractor, some backyard mechanic having welded car rims to the old (expensive!) steel fronts. I had to use what I could find. The serial number on this one is FS-12991 which make sit a later 1934 and firmly 'in the grey'. When I bought it, it was red, though I did find grey paint in several locations when I tore it down. Darren,

It is my understanding that all Farmall tractors prior to the 1937 model year were painted gray. Taking into account that they would have ran out of grau paint sometime in late 1936. Also I heard that some 1936 models that were sent out west were painted red.

I believe that if it is pre-1937 then it should have been painted gray. Your 33 should be gray.

Dan

According to an article in Red Power a couple of years ago, the first red farmalls were:
F-20 FA-68749,
F-30 FB-19064,
F-12 FS-81837,
10-20 KC-210235,
W-30 WB-15970
WA/WK-40 WKC-5197
WD-40 WDC-5120
Many farmers, including my father, had their gray farmalls painted red in the 1950's to make them look more modern.
