Changed my antifreeze on my 560D and left the system drained when it suddenly dawned on me that this was a good time to install a block heater. I have read comments in the archives on tank vs freeze plug, now I'm wondering how easy the tank style is to install on this engine (recommended plan of attack would be great)? Also, what is the diameter of the freeze plug (I'm away from the machine but near stores).

Thanks in advance - Sam C.

Sam: I had tank type block heaters on my 560D and 656D. My memory is a bit rusty on size but I believe 1500 watt rings a bell. They were the size of a soup can and plumbing went between block drain and a port in the head. In minus F weather all you needed was about a hour before starting. These are far more effective than the frost plug type. My 1066 came from factory with the frost plug type and had to be pluged in several hours in same type of weather. I also had one of the tank type on a 6 cylinder Deere.

Another system that is quite effective if your tractor is away from a power source when starting in cold weather. I had one this way as well. Quick couplers on the block and matching couplers on heater hoses of pickup. I never used this a lot as I figured it was quite hard on pickup engine, being nicely warmed up and have the cold coolant from tractor start circulating through it's system. It was better than a no go.

Put a frost plug heater in my 560 gas, and it works really nice. Just went to the IH dealer and told him what I wanted, he handed me the box. It came with instructions and took less than 5 minutes to install.

Sam.

At one time Hat heaters made a frost pulg heater that used a drive in adapter and then screw the heater into the adapter. The adapter made a good thing to screw hose fitting into and go right tank heater then put water back in one of the plugs in the head or a pipe T where the temp gauge is. Or a frost plug heater will work.

put a softplug heater in my 460 when i had it drained.had to use the plug behind the carb and the cord somewhat interferes with carb linkage so before i start i pull the cord off the heater and throw it in the tool box til next time
