I have a 72 140 international. I put new headlights on. Last night my battery died. Its a 12 volt system. I checked the generator, now should i get a voltage reading whiole it is running or is the regulator needed. when I disconnect the battery it dies. where should I start.

Ed: If it is a generator system and it stops when you remove the battery cable, your generator is definately not working. Even if the generator were putting out some current tractor would run.

Some of the later model 140 had alternators- not saying that yours does. But I have never seen any value to diconnecting the battery on a machine that is running. Many alternators are damaged by such an event. With machine stopped and all switches off, remove one battery cable. Attach one lead of voltmeter to the empty battery terminal and the other lead to the cable end. If there is a reading, something is draining the battery. Start disconnecting wires-one at a time and if no change in the voltmeter, reconnect the wire before disconnecting the next one. When the reading drops to zero, the disconnected wire, or it's attendant device, is involved in the battery drain.

It should die with a generator you need power to get power. Does it have an amp guage? Thats the first thing to add just so you know what is up. Have you tried to un hook the lights you may have done something wrong when you put them on. hope this helps you some
