Having done a valve job,and just put the head and valve assembly back
on, I'm now ready to adjust the valve clearance. I know to start with the number one cylinder at top dead center with the 1-4 tdc mark on the flywheel aligned with the pointer on the bell housing. Can I also set the clearance on the number 4 cylinder at the same time since they both are at tdc? I'm not sure where to proceed from here. Does the timing need to be reset as well. As you can tell, I haven't done this before, but want to do it right. Thanks again for your help, everybody has been great with my questions in the past....Mike

Adjust no.1 at tdc and then turn the engine 1/2 turn and adjust no.3. Turn the engine 1/2 and adjustno.4 and then do the same for no.2. The engine turns two revolutions to fire each plug once. If you have a hand crank it makes it easier. You may also want to take the distributor cap off and check where the rotor is pointing when you adjust each set of valves.

Mike,
On No. 1 TDC, adjust the first three and skip one. On No. 4 TDC, start at the rear and adjust three and skip one.

I don't have the list in front of me but there are 4 valves you can set at #1TDC and 4 at #4TDC. I bring each cylinder to TDC individually and set them that way. As long as you haven't removed any of the timing gears the time will be fine, no need to re-time.

When I do it, I set them at TDC of the compression stroke by cranking it through to that on each cylinder in turn. Probably not the only way to do it, but it works for me.
You should not need to worry about the timing if all you did was remove the head and re-install it.
