This past weekend I decided to try to get dads old #31 sickle mower going to do some cutting that needs done before winter. Besides I may use it next year to cut hay. It had not seen duty for approx 15 years or so. Needless to say the wooden pitman only lasted about 20 minutes. To make a long story short I lost the spring which goes into the end of the pitman between the wooden part and the metal end somewhere in the field. Does anyone have the part # or know if these are available any longer? I believe this uses the same basic parts as the 27 mowers, as the pitman I bought showed it would fit them as well. 2nd question: My touch control is leaking pretty heavily where one of the control rods enters the unit. It appears there is a boot which is pulled away or ?? as I can see the shiny rod where it is leaking. Is there any way to repair short of removing the unit and rebuilding? Thanks in advance.

There is an o-ring on that plunger that you see and if you disconnect the linkage from it it will pull out and you can replace the 0-ring. I took the whole unit off and it was easy but could be done without removing unit.

Thanks gene. That may save me a lot of work. I will disconnect the linkage and take a peek. The touch control unit works excellent except for this leak which has started. The old C has not seen much work for a few years, and I just want to keep it working until I get some more time to go through it a little more and give it a paint job. By the way, I have the spring ordered from the dealer. Took them a while to find it on microfich.

FC you had better luck with CIH than I did when I needed a replacement spring. My dealer said nothing available for pitman sticks! I went to New Holland and they looked up any pitman stick end and I bought the spring they had. Had to shorten it by about 1/2 inch but it works ok. Just in case Case doesn't come through I think every manufacturer probably used about the same spring. Dick Davis

Shortened the spring? Hmmm. When I made a new stick for mine I just drilled the hole deep enough. I guess there's always more than one way...
