SM 12 volt

I recently purchased a restored SM that has been converted to 12 volt. It has been running bad @ times and now it will not start. I'm wondering if it could be that transformer wired ahead of the distributor to step the voltage back to 6 volt. The points and condenser seem to be O.K. If I put a 12 volt coil on it can I throw that little transformer away?

I think Dan has it figured out. Try a jumper wire around the resistor to see if that's really the problem. Running it for 10 minutes with 12V into a 6V coil isn't going to kill it -- but it will give you more of a clue about the resistor versus the coil being the problem before you start throwing money at new parts.

I had the ballist resister go bad on my SMTA with 12 volt conversion last summer. It would suddenly die and could be restrted. Pulled it loose and found it had burned out. Put a new one on and works good. If you go to a different coil you will need a 12 volt with internal resister. Much more expensive thatn the ballist resister to replace.

what transformer. transformer only work on AC current I believe you have a ballast resistor and yes if you put the right coil you can do away with it
