Put one on dry,put the tractor all back together then filled the cooling system.I then stopped for lunch and when I came back ,I had water running down the side of the block. The next gasket I painted with aluminium paint and it has been running for 10 years.

In my opinion (and that's all it is!) it's not a good idea to put a head gasket on dry. We use 'Copper Cote' on all head gaskets unless the manufacture specifies something else. We use this on very high compression race engines as well as tractor engines. Copper Cote was developed in WWII for the Navy. It does not harden but stays pliable. Spray Aluminum paint works well also. I wouldn't use silicone. Someone may want to remove the head again someday! Some Top Fuel drag guys use silicone, but that is a real extreme application. There are a lot of good opinions/answers out there. Usually there is more than one good way to do something. Good Luck!

I replaced the head gasket on my H about a year ago and placed a very very paper thin layer of gasket sealer on both sides just to fill any inperfections and has worked fine.

Some say use it and some don't use anything. But I wanted to be sure the area around the water ports were sealed. So to have even surface area when torqing down the head the whole gasket should be covered.

It seems to me that it is marked on the gasket somewhere to use sealer. You will get a variety of answers, this was covered recently, for the 1000th time (no agreement as usual) Personally, I don't like to put any gasket on dry, may not help, but shouldn't hurt. Some don't use anything, some use silicone, some use copper spray, or aluminum paint, etc.
