It doesn't run good at all at full throttle. So head was retorqued, tappets set hot. Pulled all plugs throttle wide open ran comp test. Starting with 1 by the radiator. #1-80psi.2-85,3-85,4-85. Pulled my color spark plug chart out that shows various plugs with differant probs. 1 and 4 were a perfect normal 2 and 4 had a little bit of carbon but dry and burning half a$$. Dry air filter element. Just with a 90 degree pipe no factory air cleaner parts on it. It's 12v(-) ground w/ electronic ign. I figure it must be a timing or dist. prob. I took the dis apart to look at the gov weights and springs. Going to get new springs and the gov weight guard as it has severe wear on the two tabs that go downward in the inside circle of the guard plate. I noticed that #1 wire wasn't in the 1 on the cap. Still in correct firing order just doesn't start there. That would not matter would it? Have 12v to the dist. My guess is timing and dist.

Sounds to me like you need to adjust the dist timing. Make sure everything is timed to the pulley first, then run at WOT and turn the dist until the motor evens out. For a final test, crack the throttle quickly, mistuned motor will usually sputter or have a slow/delayed reaction. A good motor should be right there on the throotle response.
Good luck.

Open the throttle wide open then adjust the high speed screw.Start by turning it in slowly,if it gets worse stop and start backing it out until it runs smooth then go another 1/2 turn.If turning the screw in helps, stop when running smooth then back it out 1/2 turn.

Bill I don't want to start something here but if you have Champion plugs that's the first thing to get rid of...good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

I use Autolites in all my stuff. I'm rebuilding the dist. Gov and bushings etc in that area seems to have probs.

Ty,
As long as you've matched the firing order, should be no problem.

Assume from what you say it runs smooth at lower RPM, just not at full throttle. Have you tried an old strobe type timing light on it? You may need to degree mark the front pulley, but that would be the quickest way to see if you're getting too much or too little advance at full throttle. You could also see if the dist is firing erratically; which would indicate spark scatter caused by worn bushings in the distributor.

The firing order is 1342 and 1 is suppose to be timed with 1 on distributor cap. But you are right, doesn't make any differense which prong on the cap you time number one to, as long as the firing order stays the same and starts where you timed number one at. Sounds like you got a non original air filter. Easy way to rule out any problem there is to disconnect it from carb and run tractor without it hooked up to see if problem is still there. If that isn't the problem, I would make sure the tractor is timed correctly. If making some changes there, it might be a good time to go ahead and retime the engine to number one on distributor cap with number one cylinder. If timing checks out, I would bet it is either in the carb, or ignition system. Never been around that electronic ignition system myself.
