Hayride Report M Generator Question

As a new "old iron" owner, I took a group of dads and daughters on a short hayride through the pasture last night. Not sure who had a bigger time - the girls or myself! Ended the evening roasting marshmallows around the fire.

I do have a question though. I have a 1940 M that is still 6v. It seems that even running full throttle the battery won't stay charged enough to start the tractor once it is turned off. I didn't really run the lights but just to flip on then back off to make sure I was still in the ruts. I primarily used a flashlight.

It has a new starter and new battery cables and with a fresh battery turns over quickly and starts easily. But once turned off, the tractor turns over very slowly and most times won't start. However, after sitting overnight, I can get it started again.

Is the problem that the generator is not strong enough to keep the battery charged? If so, what are the options for fixing it?

Kevin

sounds like two problems. "wont crank when hot, but starts the next morning", that sounds like the timing of the spark is too far advanced and trouble when motor is hot, or maybe carbon buildup on head makes "precombustion" when hot so it will not crank at normal speed. if the battery gradually goes down, you need to short the generator F terminal to ground and see what the amp meter does. if that dont work, then bypass the regulator or cutout and put the generator A terminal straight to the ampmeter, (other side to battery) and now see what the amp meter reads. if nothing, the generator is bad.

Sounds as if it could be several things. First what do you mean by a fresh battery? A new one or freshly charged. If it`s not new I wouldn`t trust it. If you have a magneto the old ones had weak coils. Worked great cold but hot didn`t start so good, however I would think most would be replaced by now with new coils. You can check the generator by putting a wire from the "F" terminal to a ground, generator case is fine. This bypases the regulator and you should see 10 or more on the ampmeter. Good luck.

The battery is new (actually now about 3 months old). I have had to charge it twice though because it has run down. The tractor does not have magneto but has a distributor.

Kevin,

Now you are starting to sound like we have generator troubles.

What does the amp gauge show? Is it over in the positive side at about 10 amps after you start it?

Put a voltmeter across your battery with the thing at a higher speed. It should read 7 to 7.5 volts. If not, it isn't charging right.

Allan,

I think you are probably right about the generator. I have not had a chance to put the voltmeter to it yet but I can tell you that it never shows 10 on the amp gauge at full throttle. At best it is 3 to 5 and soon as the lights go on it is down in the negatives.

Next stop is voltmeter as you guys suggest. Thanks for all of your help thus far.

Kevin
