I posted this on the implement page, but thought it interesting enough to post here as well.
While tromping around the bush yesterday on the site of an old logging operation, I came across a horse drawn IHC/McCormick sickle mower. It was parked along side about 5 very old vehicles including a 1922 6 cylinder truck with a wooden cab, a couple old 3 ton Ford trucks, an old "half track" vehicle, which is a huge truck with 2 ski's !!!! on the front.

Anyway, getting back to the mower.
It is all IHC, sickle bar still there, seat is excellent, levers, steel wheels, the whole nine yards. It had a tool box mounted to the axle with 3/8" cotter keys on the lid. The lid had McCormick Hamilton Ont. cast into it.
I'm thinking of heading back there and trying to get this thing out. Nobody has claim to this stuff as it is out in the bush along the railway line where I work. I remember seeing those old trucks there at least 21 years ago, none of the stuff seems to have been disturbed since then, and surely it has been there for 40 years or more. Does anyone have any info on the mower, and seeing that IHC joined up with McCormick at some point, what year this thing could be.

The only real markings I could find other than part numbers, was cast in upper case letters on the top of the axle NEW 4.

Any help would be appreciated.

Northern Ontario.
The "tracks" don't seem to be there, the machine is sinking into the ground, the left ski is visible and is quite large, almost 12" wide.
These trucks would be hard to remove from where they are without some good size machinery.
I'm certainly thinking of getting that mower out though.

IH continued producing implements under the McCormick name long after the merger in 1902. If you're seeing the round IHC logos on the parts, that would indicate after 1909 roughly. I don't know when Hamilton got into production with mowers- I think maybe early teens.

The New 4 was built from 1896-1915.

I noticed on the forum archives that you responded to an inquirery about a "new 4" sickle mower. I have one and would like to get it operational again. The shaft that opporates the sickle is frozen and I can't seem to get it free. Any suggestions and info on the new 4 would be greatly appreciated.

Hey EZ, Sounds like you came upon some interesting stuff! The truck with the tracks and skis sounds like an old logging truck. I saw something like that at the Canadaiqua,Ny Pagent of Steam Show a couple of years ago. Hows your weather? Last thursday nite it was 20 degs F with 2" of snow but it has since warmed up again.

Yup,
Old logging rig for sure.
The whole site has alot of interesting things to find, including wooden plank sidewalks. We are heading into winter for sure, just above freezing last couple days. Snowing today, about 1" OTG.
I'm going back to the mower next week for a closer look, hope we don't get too much white stuff.

If you can get some pitcures, please post them and maybe help identify it. I almost bought one last year, but it went for more money than I wanted to spend. Besides, I have an pto driven IH/McCormick cycle mower for the H. Wonder if the 1 you found is the same as the one I was looking at.
