Hey guys, I was just told by a mechanic that if I have a steel head gasket to use the copper spray and if the gasket was fiber I didn't have to use anything, what's yalls opinion. Also if I use the copper spray do I spray the head and block also?

Gentlemen, I keep it simple using the method my father always used - "Gun Grease." I grease both sides of the head gasket with a "Multi-Purpose" grease and torque it down. If you have to remove the head again-a common occurance for me-the gasket comes off clean and is reusable. I have had no problems using this "Original" technique.

F-Dean,

Yep, I used to use that also.

I've put hundreds of 'em together using absolutely nothing. So far, so good.

Buster,

If you have a can of aluminum spray paint lying around, that will work equally well. Just the gasket, both sides.

I wouldn't spray the head or the block, 'cause the stuff tends to build up upon itself.

The mechanic is correct. Usually the head gasket box will have the instructions in it. The metal faced ones have to use a sticky sealant applied to them. It will be sold at any auto parts supply store. The fiber ones don't require it. I have used both and have had no problems. Just follow the directions on the can of sealant if you go that route.
