According to my electrical tester I have traced a power flow through battery, starter, switch, into 2 post of coil. This is where I lose current-no flow through to the distributor cap. It does have the current through the points. What I should I look for and how can I test the coil on the tractor. Also where can i find a wiring diagram for the alternator. It is a 12 volt

If you remove the wire between the coil and the distributor, you can do a quick and dirty test of the coil. Momentarily gounding this post while the ignition is switched on, and then removing the ground, should result in a nice deep blue spark from the high voltage post. If this works, yet you get no spark when things are connected normally, the problem will be in the points, condensor, or grounding system for the points. The high voltage is "induced" in the coil, so you will not be able to trace that path using a normal ohmmeter or whatever.

You want a wiring diagram for the alternator? Has this tractor been converted? If so, there are several ways to connect an alternator. Look in the "Research & Info" section to the left of this page. It should give you something to go by - though maybe not an exact drawing.

I did a (Yahoo)search on 'alternator' and came up with the site below. I includes both a diagram and an explanation of operation. I'm having a bit of trouble following your testing but a the statement ". . . current through the points" implys continuity through the coil primary winding. Of course the capacitor could be shorted. How much current are you measuring 'through the points?' About three amp's would be about correct. If the cap. is shorted it will be high, like smoke. To get a rough test of the coil secondary measure the resistance from either coil post(the windings are connected at one post) to the socket of the high voltage lead. The resistance should be a few thousand ohms, however be aware all this does is test continuity nothing for for internal shorts.

You wouldn't expect to have current throught the cap, to test the coil you could simply crank and plug a spark plug onto one of the normal leads on the cap, and watch for a spark.

as for the alt, there is a post a yesterday with a link to that subject.
