Im new to the "RED FAMILY". Ive been hanging out with the DEERE group most of my life. I just picked up an 856 diesel and I would like to kick some 4020's butts, including "my" 4010 at some local running pull"s. I would like to end up with a min. of 150 hp and maybe go up to 175 or so. I know I need a turbo but what tractor should I get it off of or is there a "combine" that had one that would work ? Will I have to do injector pump work or go to bigger injectors? What else do I need to do?

Hope you RED guys can help me stomp some GREEN butt!!!

Thank's a bunch KP puller

I am friends with my local dealership's main mechanic. Huge 56 series fan, he is, and once you get him talking IH engines, you will never stop him. One night he went through every engine from 460 to the 466 in the 88 series, a quick (and overwhelming) overview, and he said he can get an 856 engine to 200 horses easy. Make sure the engine is a DT (nearly all 856's came with the DT407) because DT translates to Turbo ready, and has dual oil jets and a couple other things non-turbo designed engines don't have. On a personal note, we own two 856's on our farm, one bought new and has known no other fields, and they have to be one of if not the greatest tractor model IH ever produced. Good luck on a real piece of agricultural equipment!!! Just kidding, but enjoy your red power.

It should. Sometimes there's a letter or other figure before it, but on the I believe left side of the block the engine serial number would be something like (X)DT407XXXXX X. Some do say D407XXXXX, so that's the difference you would be looking for. good luck, and I hope I did help!!!

Our 1256 dynoed 162 HP at a IH dealer several
years back with new air and fuel filters. New
filters can make BIG difference when looking for
max performance.

you need the center part or whole exhaust housing off a 1256,1456 had a odd turbo and most have been converted to run a normal 3lm or t-04 turbo.as stated in the other reply a 915 combine will work but it must be an early 915 or it will have a 400 series engine instead of the 407.

915 combine 1256 or 1456 turbo should work, you may have turn down the leaf screw to get the horse you are asking for but if engine is in good shap should not have to work on injectors. But of corse that all helps 1256 had bigger holes in injector lines so that helps don't remember about injectors.
