The gear shift arm has snaped off flush with the transmition housing. This part probably costs about $20 bucks. Am I going to have to tare this whole tractor down = $500+ in order to replace this $20 part?

Hi Hughes, you can chance this part by removal of the muti-control valve. It's on the left side of your tractor, under the hydrolic filter. Drain all the oil, remove pipe and PTO linkages, all the 3/8 bolts around the cover. With a short 7/8 open wrenche , you can remove the nut securing the gear shift lever. Put a new gasket and O ring when replace the valve Bernard le mécano Québec Canada

Thank you very much for your advise and information about replacing the broken gear shift lever on my 1973 IH 454 gas tractor.

If by chance you have anything else say about this project, it would be welcome!

Thanks again!

Hi Hughes, it's not such a tough job to change the broken lever, just take the time. When you have remove the nut, push the shaft outside, it have a fork beside the nut. One spline is missing to time the fork and the shaft. If you have others question about this repair, E-mail me. Good luck !! Bernard le mécano Québec Canada
