While I had the head off for a valve job, I inspected the cylinder walls for wear. I noticed a ridge at the top of each cylinder from ring wear. Can anyone tell me if there is a tollerance for that before ring replacement. The engine does not blow any blue smoke except on inital start up for a few seconds, oil pressure good.

The spec will be for bore diameter oversize itself. Usually the puff of smoke on start-up is from worn valve guides allowing a bit of oil to collect on the top of the valve and turning to smoke when started. Probably fixed that with the valve job. Maybe confirm that with the machinist?

Mike,
I think your spec is the compression the cylinder makes - and there's no set tolerance for how much stuff built up at the top.

You'll pick up some cranking compression from the valve job. As long as you're not doing a complete rebuild, leave the ridge as it is.

Hi Mike,

I think the tolerance would be "0". But, look again; make sure that ridge is not just carbon build-up.

The rule of thumb I always went by was if I could "grab" the ridge with my fingernail.

Then later, I got to going by if I could "shake" the piston from side to side.

Finally, I started just going thru the engine from top to bottom if they ever started eating oil. And here's the reason:

The trouble with just doing a valve job (and, I've seen this 100's of times) is that the top end gets tightened up and the lower end cannot stand the increased higher pressures. Before long, she's knocking on the bottom end and you have to do the whole thing anyway.
