PTO shifting tube on Super C

Today I removed the PTO shifting tube from my Super C which I had welded several years ago. I decided to take one out of a salvaged C and it had also been welded. I have used PTO on a lot of B and C models and did never hear of this being a weak spot. Is this part a common problem?

I broke one many years ago on the C I have when baling hay. Admittedly it was abuse that broke it. I was in heavy hay and had stalled the tractor with a large 'bite' in the bale chamber. I was wide open and dumped the clutch. We replaced the tube with a new one rather than welding. This was probably 30+ years ago.
