Am I killing my IH 140?

Hi,

I have an IH 140, which I use primarily to prep beds and cultivate vegetables. In the fall, I spread horse manure and compost with it, since its the only other tractor I have with a PTO. The spreader is a 163bu. New Holland. I keep it in 2nd gear to transport full, 1st gear to run. It doesn't really grunt at all when I turn it on and start spreading in 1st. It does seem to grunt a bit when I start out in 2nd gear. Otherwise it seems to work fine, horse doo is mostly shavings so its light, and compost is nowhere near as heavy or messy as cow manure off a pad.

Am I doing any permanent damage to the engine, tranny or pto by putting this kind of load on a 140?

Thanks,

Paul

Paul: My 130 hauled and spread all the manure from about 75 holsteins with a NH spreader slightly smaller than yours. It did that for a couple of years. It also operated a 3 ton fan type lime spreader. It hauled 158 cords of wood from bush 113 loads. That horse manure should be just play.

Oh the other thing my 130 did was hooked drawbar to drawbar by 10' chain with a David Brown 990. The little Farmall pulled the DB backwards with diff lock in and both wheels spinning. 130 had wheel weights and chloride, David Brown had neither. 45 years and still going.

It doesn't sound to me like you are overworking it. I expect it will last longer than you will.

lots of those old tractors had to dig and grunt for years and they ain't all dead. I don't think you will hurt it any.

its 23 HP about the same size as an 8N I don't think you are working it to hard sounds like you could use some thing bigger but as long as it handles it go ahead remember tractors are made for work they love it
