I can pick up a nice 656 running well very affordably. Would it be a good third tractor on a small farm? Standard tranny diesel. Any problems I should look for or expect. It has about 6000 hours.

Ross: The 56 series tractors were with out question the very best IH ever built, and the 656 was no exception. It will run a 9' haybine on about 1.25 US gal of fuel per hour. I had 16.9x38 on rear of my 656 and without wheel weights or chloride it would pull a IH 510, 5x16 semi-mount plow. I always plowed 7 to 8 inches deep. I will grant you it was a sandy loam soil. I will say this the 16.9 tires made the tractor, it came with 15.5. The larger tires gave just a bit better ground clearence, and a whole lot more traction.

Don't have one. But the 656 is one tractor I've never heard any complaints about.

Ross,

That 656D is one sweet little tractor; roughly 65hp.

They are little light in the rear end so if you are planning to use it with a loader you might want to add fluid to the tires and add more weight.

I always bumped the timing just a 'tweak' in the winter to make it start a little easier, since they use a low pressure pump. Gotta remember to pull it back in the spring before putting the tractor back in the field, tho.

Can't think of any major problem areas.

Allan
