Tractorfolk:

Often characterize myself as a mechanic wannabe.Probably proved it on Saturday.
Governor spring broke on my Cub; pulled radiator to replace spring . Couldn't figure a way to get to it w/o removing radiator.

Re-installed radiator using RTV in place of gasket which was badly worn. Pushed out RTV on the outside of radiator when I brought bolts all the way home. Now I suspect I did the same on the inside which means with hot radiator fluid I risk it coming loose and gunking the radiator up or the RTV lodging somewhere else in the system.

Any thoughts here? Any experience here? Must I pull the radiator off and start all over again? If so, how much RTV is too much?

The sad part of all this is, that you didn't have to pull the rad. off. The spring can be changed with out removing rad.

Hi Kajun,

Here’s my take: It is too late now....run it and see if a problem ever shows up. You might be okay with it the way it is.

Now, let’s talk about that sealer. Ever notice that the manufacturers never use any sealer of any kind? The use of gasket sealers is a cute little marketing gimmick that we have all fallen for at one time or another.

It is totally and completely unnecessary stuff, IMHO. :>)

As always, just my opinion,

Allan

I assume you are talking about a Cub radiator. If so, in my opinion, any RTV is too much. A gasket doesn't cost but a few dollars and don't need anything to seal it but cleanliness.
