300 U Questions

Mornin. Just picked up a 300U, that has a couple of problems. It hasn't run in 3 years but was running when it was parked with a transmission problem. Rolls with clutch in. But can only find one gear with the shift lever. Thoughts? 2nd problem....left front wheel responds to the steering wheel, the right front doesn't. Thoughts? This is my first IH. Thanks in advance for any thoughts you have that can help point me in the right direction.

The transmission problem could be the tractor is locked in 2 gears. Many of the IH tractors of the 40's and 50's had that problem. I'm not sure if you can take the top off where the shifting lever sits on the transmisson but if you can you can pry the gear back into place. On the steering, do you have power steering or manual. Does the shaft coming out of the steering unit turn. If its manual steering, there is a screw that keeps the gears meshed inside the gear box and it affects the right sight. I'm not sure what it has if its power steering.

Thanks Charlie for the reply. It's manual steering and may be severly out of alignment due to a bent left tie rod. I'll straighten it and realign with steering wheel turns counted and place at half way and wheels straight away. The tranny is another issue. Sounds like I need to do some exploritory surgery. Appreciate your insights Charlie.
