There were around 20,000 of the MDs built, so can't consider them rare. IH built all a lot of gas start diesels like that in the 40s and 50s. Some of them were big, up to at least 200 HP. The big IH dozers had this kind of engine back then.

Not really rare, gas start M diesel made starting about 1941+, 450 was following model to MD/superMD mid 50s. Check archives - interesting head design, 3 valves, separate gas combustion chamber. John Deere and others diesel at that time had small gas engine (pony motor) to start the diesel engine, IHC used 1 engine block with more complicated casting of head, less physical difference between gas and diesel tractor. Wolfe,

I'm not 10000% sure, but I think that all those old Farmall diesels up to the "06" series were that way, weren't they?

I can't remember how the "56" diesels started, tho. Time gets away from me.

That's the only way IH made diesels until the 460/560 came out in the late 50's.
