loose valve guides allowing oil to go down the valve stem and burn the oil, or bad rings ? Does anyone know a good way to determine where the oil is getting into the combustion chamber. I dont really want to re-ring the pistons if the valve guides are the problem. I considered doing a compression test but I dont think that would indicate the condition of the oil control ring. It is not over full on oil. Any help appreciated. Thanks ,

John,

Take 'er out on the road and wind her up in road gear. Then just reach down and move the throttle down to an idle leaving it in gear letting the ground speed pull it down.

Note if the smoke gets worse on deacceleration. If it does, then look at the rings.

If on the other hand, it smokes excessevely after sitting all night and then clears up somewhat after running awhile, this points to the guides.

Hope this helps,

Allan
