Hi,
I need a tractor with a really slow 1st gear, 3pt hitch, diesel, wide front, 2WD, narrow tires (13.6" or less). I have an IH 574 but its geared for drag racing and is useless for transplanting vegetable seedlings.

Any suggestions on models to look at, or tractors for sale that might fit the bill?

Thanks!

Paul

If you want to go a little older, we use our 300 (40 HP)Farmall with the T/A engaged for transplanting- pumpkins, cantelope, and squash...it works really well. It has a wide front with power steering. and a saginaw 3 pt hitch on the back.. but then again a hydro would be the best setup. If you want a diesel int the older tractors I'd look for a SMDTA, 350 or 400 or 450. Some utility or wheatland models also came with the TA.

Paul: There was also a Hydro version of the 574. Just about every 40-60 hp tractor built in past 25 years has been available with a deep reduction gear box on special order. Problem is the guys that have these, bought them new and have kept them forever. The guy I do some trucking for has a Ford he bought new. He told me the day he bought it there were only 2 available in North America, and one of those sold while they were making the deal. Finding one of this type of tractor will be difficult as they do cost more so guys have tended to use them only for those specific jobs, thus they never wear them out or trade them.

A 656D Hydro would probably fit your needs. Infinitly adjustable speeds, including very slow, by using a hydrostatic transmission. A little bigger than you specify, but not much bigger.
