We purchased a new tire for the single front tire on my dads SMTA. After splitting the front hub we found tremendous wear. These axles did not use bearings. We had a lot of wobble in the steering because of this. So it was time for a new axle. I machined an axle out of tool steel and bored the hub halves to fit. Drives like a dream now with no wobble at any speed. Thought you might enjoy this fix.

What type of steel did you use, P-20? I was going to make one for my C, the wheels needed to be bored just as bad as your axles looked, But I did the next best thing, and it was easier too, I just sold it.

I used an S7 alloy and left it unhardened. The original diameter was 1.625. I bored the hubs first to see what diameter they would clean up at. The new diameter ended up at 2 inches.

I've never been one to throw away a part because of a little wear but I think you got all of the good out of the old axle. Great looking job on the new one.If you could buy a new one no telling what it would cost.
