The starter just grinds when you try it, the starter drive gear is getting pretty flat on the
end. Would a new starter drive take care of this?
Thks, Fred

Steve, I've had the starter out and the teeth on
the gear drive are pretty chewed up but the ring
gear don't look too bad, it's chewed up alittle but not enough to have to replace it I don't think. I looked at the benex spring but don't know how to tell if its bad. I've ordered a service manual but it'll be a couple wks before I get it. Thks, Fred

Fred,
Hard to tell with the spring unless you know somebody who can test spring rates and knows the spec. On my H (which is the same as a W4, not 6, but similar anyway) I disassembled the whole Bendix gear, cleaned all the built up crud off, and lubed it -- made the whole thing slide in and out a whole lot easier. I also relubed the bearings and changed the brushes. Made the thing turn a lot faster as well. If you haven't already, might try that as it's a whole lot cheaper than biting the bullet on a new Bendix assembly. Good luck with it.

I think I'm gonna get it rebuilt for one hundred dollars, I did take it all apart and tried to clean it but didn't do anything except wipe of the benex spring. I know the brushes didn't look real good, I will let you know how it turns out when I get it done. Thks again, Fred

Fred,
You won't know for sure until you pull the starter and look. The Bendix gear on the starter could be the whole problem, but you could also have chewed up teeth on the ring gear on the flywheel (which is a somewhat nastier job to tackle).

Last time I looked a new Bendix gear for the starter on my H was somewhere around 50 bucks (I think the W6 shares the same starter/Bendix).
