For those following the continuing saga of my starting problems with my '51 Super A, here is the update. I went out this afternoon and removed the switch on top of the starter and hit all contacts with sandpaper to get them good and shiny, I rapped the starter several times with the hammer handle and cleaned all spark plug and coil contacts. I hooked everything back up and pulled the starter rod - ERRRRR, ERRRRR, ERRRRR!!! It sounded like the battery didn't have enough kick to crank the starter, so I jumped it with my truck battery and it fired right up! However, if it dies, the tractor battery alone is not enough to restart it and it has to be jumped again. I'm thinking I have a bad battery (or at least a bad cell in the battery). Am I right???

I have followed this to some extent. A worn starter will also give you these symptoms. You could switch the batteries between the truck and tractor. then see if the problem follows the battery or the tractor. This would not eliminate wiring as a cause but would eliminate the battery.

This also assumes that the truck and tractor batteries are close to the same capacity, obviously a battery sized for a lawn mower would not start a diesel truck wether it was good or not.

Hey Bama,
Take your battery into a parts store with one of the really nice, new battery testers these guys have been putting in there stores. They can test your battery to see if it will accept and hold charge within just a couple of minutes. Our local advance auto has one, and it is far and away better than the battery tester at the autozone across the road. If you have them test your battery and they say, "We'll need to charge it overnight", that's the WRONG kind of tester! Does sound like a bad battery, but you may still have some bad cables or connections. My Bronco acted the same way and we traced it back to a battery cable that had corroded inside the insulation such that it was not readily apparent. We found that one by disconnecting cables, cleaning contacts, and checking resistance with a meter before reinstalling. I think that bad cable read around 6-8 ohms, and I think all the good ones came in around 1 ohm. Good luck, and GO VOLS!

Bought a hydrometer about 5 years ago, don't use it much but it an easy way to rule out any batterys thats not sealed. Best 3-4 dollars ever spent. Don c

its got to be one or two things (1) first try the battery (2) the starter maybe taking away all the juice from the battery

Im not sure what you have 6 or 12 volt. If it's 6 volt, you may have too small diameter cables, or the battery is junk...

Bama,
If I remember right, you said you had charged the battery..... .so, it "does" sound like your battery is bad.
How old is the battery ?....I think about 3 years is about tops for 6 volts..... at least that is the experience I've had, although I usually don't buy "high quality batteries"
You can always try putting the battery on a charger over night again, and if that doesn't solve it, I'd go get a new one, since, as I remember it, the tractor was starting fine before.

Gary and Dave - the battery is 12v and, Dave, the battery cables are new as is the rest of the wiring. The tractor was starting OK six weeks ago, but hasn't started since. I have left it on charge until the charger shows the full charge, but I am beginning to suspect the battery itself at this point. I have to go into town tomorrow for physical therapy, so I'll stop by Tractor Supply, have them test the battery and get a new one if needed.
