Farmall Super AV Differences

I bought a farmall super av that I am planning to restore. My questions are first of all what type of engines can be correct for the Super AV. I believe mine has a 123 engine in it as it has a water pump. The problem is the hood doesn't fit exactly right. It seems that the radiator is a bit far forward for the hood area to sit down properly. This is what has led some to say my motor is the wrong one. How do I tell which motor I have, what ones are correct, and if I have a correct engine how will I get the hood to fit better? I don't think I can move the radiator back without getting into the fan due to the water pump. The old tractor is rough but runs and I hate not to restore it since it is a high crop. Anybody's help is appreciated.

Dereck: Lots of C-113 engines have had a waterpump added. Serial Number of engine will not necessarily guarentee cubic inch ID. All C-113 engines in Super A's built after early 1953 are bored to take the larger sleeves and pistons as in the C-123, thus turning engine into a C-123.

On your hood not matching up with nose piece, it could be the top support for the rad is bent. I have seen this on several tractors. 140 I bought this spring had the rad pushed back 1.5" at top and didn't strike fan.

Hugh Mackay: I have information from this forum that said the Super A blocks were bored to take C123 sleeves and pistons, but were actualy sleeved down to C113 size.
Is this correct and if so, what is the purpose of boring a larger size and sleeving it down? Or did I get the info wrong?

Slowpoke: By 1953 IH were ell into production of the Super C using the C-123 engine. Thus the SA was the only tractor left using the C-113 engine. I am only guessing here but probably they used up the stock on C-113 engines, and it was more economical to make thicker sleeves that to cast a separate block. I don't know whether I am right, I'm just looking that as a possible reason.

Why they didn't just turn SA as well as SC into a C-123 engine, who knows? That was IH management for you.

If you're correct, that means some engineer had a good idea to make one block serve for two applications.
Thanks.

Dereck, I would start by checking the serial number plate on your seat support. That would tell you what year tractor you have and also cross check that number to the number stamped on the engine block under the number #1 sparkplug. The position of the radiator is pretty much determined by the bolts that come up through the front bolster casting. You might possibly have the wrong grill assembly.
