My buddy & I got the '67 706 Gas (that I bought a little over a week ago) into his shop last night to start the engine rebuuild. We took the head & oil pan off, got the #1 piston out of the block and started looking for the edges of the sleeves... but we do not see any sleeves. I thought this engine was supposed to have sleeves in it. Anybody have a theory as to what is going on here? Is it possible that the original engine has been removed and replaced w/ a combine or cotton picker engine? Any help from folks who have more experience than I do would be appreciated.

How much did you pay for it? and how much gas did it burn pulling the harrow.

With an engine this size you might have to tow a trailer full of gas behind the harrow.

My guess you got a really good deal on this tractor that didn't tutn out to be so good.

e, I paid $2,000 for it. The sheet metal is pretty straight, and overall, the tractor does not appear to have been abused. I have not used it enough yet to determine how much gas is "a lot," but I would guess it would consume a fair amount. Since I am not a full-time farmer, I do not mind the gas burning - I will be glad to trade the high gas consumption for ease of winter starting. If I was working 300 acres of cotton every year, it would be a different matter. The tractor cranked easily & runs great - it just smoked a little. We have already cut the ridges off the cylinders, and the wear is not too bad. We are hoping to get the engine overhaul completed this weekend. The engine tunred out to be from a combine. My buddy has already fixed a lot of the minor deficiencies we found, such as the tach and fuel gauge not working. I am hoping to get another 706 soon, this one a LP gas burner, for parts as soon as my contact can reach the owner. (The proposed parts tractor is supposed to have a good TA & PTO, but has a cracked head.) I am still satisfied w/ my purchase.

On the left side of the engine there is a spot machined flat behind the oil filter housing just above the frame rail where the engine size should be stamped along with the engine serial number. It is possible to convert the 263/291 to a 301 but it takes alot of work.

Mr. Neubauer, We found numbers on the block, near the water pump, where a book tells us numbers are for combine engines. We have cut the ridges on the cylinders, honed the cylinders and the wear is not too bad. We are hoping to get the engine overhaul completed this weekend. We are pretty sure that the engine turned out to be from a combine. I am hoping to get another 706 soon, this one a LP gas burner, for parts as soon as my contact can reach the owner. (The proposed parts tractor is supposed to have a good TA & PTO, but has a cracked head.) This engine should have sleeves, in case I need to build another tractor engine. Thanks for your feedback and help!

Sounds like some put a motor out of a 806 gas tractor or off a 715 combine. They did not use sleeves which is a 301 cu.in. and look the same as the early 706 that had a 263 and the late that had the 291 motor. If someone replaced it with a 301 gas, you should have around a 92 hp motor now compared to the factory 263 and 291 at around 72 hp. They are still basicley the same motor. They all use the same head.

Larry, Thanks for your answer. All I knew before last night was that the tractor was smoking. I have had the tractor less than two weeks. I pulled an offset harrow with the tractor Monday - the same offset harrow that stops my 350 Farmall Diesel and 424 International dead in their tracks- and the 706, even w/ the worn out engine, pulled the harrow like a charm. This afternoon, my buddy took the numbers from the block, and is trying to determine exactly what we have. Someone recently had the head off, judging from the head and head gasket, and the head looks good. We are weighing our options for rebuild, now that we cannot install sleeves. We are hoping to get some new pistons, or, better yet, some new pistons that are .002 over standard. (Original - looking IH pop up pistons were in the engine.) The cylinder walls look fair, and to me, it would be cost prohibitive to take the block off to have it bored. I am not a full time farmer, and I cannot spend oodles of $ on the engine. Thanks for the help, and for the info.
