Ive got a little problem with my H. Its still the 6v system with a gen. It charges wonderful the lights work great it cranks really good for a 6v system when it wants too !!!! The problem is sometimes it starts fine others the starter just starts to engauge and it acts like the engine is locked up! You have to either get out the old hand crank and if that doesnt work you have to put it in a high gear and pull it off. But this doesnt happen all the time. Thanks a lot for the input.

It could be a starter problem like others have suggested, or in my case, it's the ring gear.

Next time it does it, pull the starter and look at the ring gear in that place, if it's pretty beat up, that's probably your problem. What I do is put it in a high gear and rock the rear tire, this will turn the motor enough to let the starter move back.

The starter armature may have a dead spot in it; when it stops with the brushes touching the dead spot, the armature will not turn.
Take it to an electrical repair shop that specializes in starters & generator/alternator repair.

I'd say have the starter checked out. Sounds like it might need an overhaul. If the starter won't spin it, but you can crank it, it's not locked up.
