I just got a 1949 H and was wondering if I need to change to a dist. I've worked on it some today and seems i'm not getting any fire. Not to much on mags. but any info would help

I'd say keep the mag. check the cap, wires, points & condensor. Coil's built into the mag, or i'd say try that. If you switch to a distributor system you can't run it if the generator ever dies or the battery is shot. Just the other day we were running our H without a battery in it. Used the bat. to start it, then put it in the m to charge it. (h has a dead generator)
6 or 12 volts won't matter to the mag either. Need to change the coil or add a resitor if you're running a distributor system.

Hello: I too have aquired a 1941 "A" with a dead mag. I have checked the condensor and points and are leaning toward the coil. Has anyone got a test to do or is it simply a continuity check. There is none? Any help will reserect this fine example. Thanks
Jim

if the impulse trips, why not just replace the coil, points and condenser. Generally that is all that these magnetos need.

In many cases the points are corroded from sitting and if you fold emery cloth in half and insert it between the points and give them a good rubbing the tractor will likely start. I wouldn't change a mag over, if the components are good it is just as reliable as any system....Mike in Exeter Ontario

I've put in new parts and still no spark. I found a man that works on them and will repair it for 75.00 + cost of any more parts that it may need . I will let you guys know what was wrong and thank you all very much for your help. Funny thing I'm 48 yrs. old and grew up on red tractors, have drove a H many years and never had no trouble with the mag on it. I just bought this tractor and it's been sitting for 6 years so I guess somethings are going too go bad in time. Ronnie
