I am in the process of restoring a 1939 Farmall A. It has a one row cultivator on it. There are two hand levers for the front set of cultivators. One lever raises both shanks up at the same time. The other lever raises only the left shank up. The question is: What is the purpose of this second lever only raising the left shank? I would like to know as much as I can about my Farmall A. Appreciate any help. Thanks....Gerald

Careful moving the lift levers when the cultivators are removed. The helper springs should be adjusted to allow very little power to be needed to lift the weight of the cultivators. When the weight of the cultivators is removed there can be a lot of tension on those springs and when you release the lever it will snap down and hit you on the head with a lot of power. Dave.

The other posts are correct the springs on the levers are for loading the lifting so it will lift easy. Ihave the lever that will just lift the rear tooling and prefer the set-up so i can just use rear if i care. These are great for garden stuff. I also have one with exhaust lift. Also the A-435 which will cover up to 6 rows 15in on center it also has the four row fertilizer. I am restoring it as it has three tool bars for mounting shovels ect. Do you need any other parts?

Gerald,
One lever raises and lowers the cultivator. The other adjusts the depth of each side relative to one another.

Gerald; I beleive there are two different model cultivator setups that were hand lift for the "A"s. On the '44 "A" that I have, I have two levers as well, and like you described, one raises the whole gangs, the other rasied only the left side. The rear gangs on my lift connect to the front rockshaft via a arm and rais up and down with the lever that rasies both arms up in the front (the inside arm). The other arm (the outside arm) is for adjusting the height of the left side front, it does not have the range of lift that the inside arm has. This is usefull when you are on uneven ground and need to adjust the height to keep the teeth even in the ground. The other style of hand lifts for culitvating (if I am correct)has a lever on the driver's platform (on the right) to rasie and lower the rear left assembly only. I also have a lever there for lifts, but it is for the plow lift that is seperate from the cultivators and has to be off for my rear culitvator lifts. I still have the cultivator lifts (not the gangs) on the tractor if you would like some pictures. Good luck with your tractor, the "A"s are really good machines.

I have a 40 "A that came with both shanks for under belly cultivation . I also have a few spring teeth for the rear and shanks that go along with it. I have never tried to mount the cultivators but do know I have a shank and a few teeth missing. Is it possible, in your case, that the one lever should be configured to raise/lower the rear part- spring teeth/shanks? Just a guess on this one. I have a plow also that I do use in the spring and fall and use 2 levers on the right side to raise/lower and change pitch angle on the point.
