I have the H my dad bought new in September of 1943. It came on steel, magneto ignition, no lights, no battery, no starter, distillate fuel. He got the H, a 7-foot disk, and a 2-bottom moldboard plow (14") for less than $1000. As I remember him telling it, I think the price for those three items was $979.

My grandpa bought a new H in 1943 or 44 and I think he paid around 800 dollars for it. I still have the sales invoice for it somewhere. because of the war it came with steel wheels on the rear, mageneto and no battery starter, after the war that was all added on.

I remember when my grandfather replaced a older H with a newer model about 52-53 or so. He put it in terms of cows. Said he had to sell twice as many cows to pay for the new tractor than he did for the old one. Do believe I got more in my 41 H than he had in the ones he bought.

Bill: The H prices you are quoted I would guess are very accurate. My dad's 51 H was $1,650. Back in those days Can. and US dollar were very close, just a couple of cents difference.

By 1955 a new 300 had jumped to about $3,100. 560 diesel in 1963 was around $4,200. 656 in 1967 was about $4,500. 1066 in 1975 was $18,500 with cab air and duals. Since then it's gone to H@#$

As a sideline, I am looking at my grandfather's farm journal with an entry dated September 4, 1917 where he paid $1199.00 for a 10-20 Titan (and $210.00 for a Sullivan moldboard plow).

Peabody: I have somewhere in my positions an old newspaper dated 1910 and an add for breakfast at a hotel in Montreal, Canada. Breakfast included cerial, coffee, bacon, two eggs, whole wheat toast and jam of your choise, all for $ 0.25. I wonder if their still in business.

Another item I have is a diary kept by my great grand mother. This runs from 1896 to 1902. All she ever recorded was weather and what they did on farm each day. Nothing very steamie in this one. I know they were very religious people from other family documents. She mentions Sunday and what it meant, however no mention of Christmas Day. One year for Dec.25, entry was. Weather is frosty and crisp, George tended the livestock, then hitched the horses and went to the woods to cut firewood and sawlogs. Sawlogs were always a significant cash crop on that farm.

Hamburger, bag of chips, and coke $00.25 she sold it after her husband died. Of couse it 1971 when I quit the NCR Co. as a Tech Services Rep. I was making $160.00 a week and was due for a raise, and that was pretty good money.

Jim: Ah wasn't it great, our money was worth something back then. In 1960 I bought a pair of leather boots, under $3. Today I paid $130. Now I realize the reality of inflation. What I can't figure is how they made the 1960 boots so comfortable and the 2003 ones so uncomfortable.

according to "150 Years Of International Harvester", the H had a 1940 price of $789.50 with rubber fronts and steel back wheels. When equipped with full steel the price dropped to $765. Equipped with full rubber was $962.
