Why is headlight placement different on a 460/340 etc Farmall and a International Utility Style. On the Farmall they are at rear of hood on utility at front of hood, Personally I think they work much better up front instead of shining down the side of tractor, never seen them up front on Farmall though, why?

Anyone ever seen them mounted up front on a Farmall?

Yes, I have seen them mounted up front, but that is not factory. The other guys are right, they are mounted in the middle of the tractor so you can clearly see what you're doing around the whole tractor, with less concern about what's ahead in the distance. Having the lights behind the front wheels helps you stay between the rows. When IH got into the 66 series, they added lights to the front of the tractor, but they still had what were called "work lights" just ahead of the operator's platform.

I don't really know, but perhaps they would be in the way when installing some of the attachments, such as the corn pickers.

Hi Ken,

When using the tractor after dark, say when using a belly mount been cutter, you need all the light you can get underneath the tractor.

If you are cultivating at night with a belly-mount cultivator, it would be impossible to stay out of the row without those lights.

You've just got to watch the implement at night.

And, I would add:

In the old days before center pivots, this choice of 'time' was not an option. The beans had to be cut at night, usually starting around 1 or 2am and while the dew was down.

Waiting until daylight and after the beans dried would guarantee that they would shell out on the ground and the loss of the crop.
