I've been working on my project 240...it steers ok without loader on, but wont with it...i've worked a little on pump on the steering..it is an engine driven hyd. pump..are there any adjustments i can make to boost pressure, the rear arms have plenty of power, and fluid is good and clean...any suggestions? also, interested in sheetmetal parts...thank you

i think one torque tube is broken? unsure..at one time we farmed and had as many as 7 tractors..as years went by. i sold all of them..i went 3 years without a tractor..(my acreage is all rented)..you know i don't really need this tractor, but i think cause missed farmin way of life, i am sure happy to have it...o.k. enough reminiscin....

Thanks for comment, i agree that loader for this tractor isn't a good idea, except i'm on a budget and this is only tractor i own...the loader is a superior loader that's huge but it does bolt on frame in front and back, so i hope it won't brake..my exhaust is going out the top, but originally it was underslung. I know this because of the brackets, and the fact that the heat from the exhaust really damaged the LH rear tire. I got tractor/loader as is from father in law..it sat probable 20-25 years..I have fixed just about everything that needs fixin..spent maybe $1000 on this "free tractor/loader" and now am moving on to more of cosmetic repairing..I am going to change filter/screen again...changed all seals on power steer. pump and is working better though...i am going to contact gentleman on parts, and maybe can be of assistance looking, for other parts as there's some salvage places round this duluth minnesota area..eh! (fyi not everybody in mn says EH! eh

Deano,
I have a set of all sheet metal and emblems other than hood and main hood skirts. E-mail me or call me at 317-216-8269. Good luck with the loader....breaks torque tube rear mounting bolts at the tranny easily.

The engine driven hydraulic pump is the only pump on the 240. If the Fast-Hitch and the remote valves have good lifting power, the pump is most likely fine. The problem could be in the regulator/saftey valve. I'm more familiar with this valve on non-power steering 240's, I'll have to check my book and get back to you. Have you checked the screen and changed the filter? They're located under a square cover held on by four bolts at the base of the hydraulic valve support on the right side of the tractor. Also, I would strongly reccomend that you don't put a loader on that 240. I've heard of too many of these tractors in the Farmall C- 240 family breaking in half when a loader is used. Sheetmetal parts for a 240, especially the side panels, are just about impossible to find.

K.B.... I dont't have a parts book yet, so can you tell me if the 240 Utility exhaust exits thru the hood with the muffler straight up, parallel to the hood facing forward, or drops down along the belly? Mine has the manifold broken at the exhaust pipe and cobbled up to run thru the hood and forward. Half of the hole in the hood looks factory, and half is cut and folded back an inch.

The parts book doesn't really specify that. It just shows the underslung exhaust parts and says "for tractors with underslung exhaust". Says the same for the hood. Every 240 Utility I've ever seen has had underslung exhaust, but that isn't saying that you couldn't get them with the muffler out the hood.

slowpoke,
the 240U exhaust goes through a fitting with a 180deg bend that bolts on top of the exhaust manifold. I think it then goes down and back under the tractor.

Thanks, Stan and K.B. Maybe someone cut a decent hole for the thru-the-hood-exhaust, then found that it was off by an inch and tore it back to fit the pipe.
The broken out section was repaired using a flat plate and four long bolts held by two metal strips under the casting. Then the exhaust pipe was welded over a hole in the plate.
It's amazing the way some people make poor repairs.
