What is the physical difference between a standard and narrow tread F-20?

Hello Dan,

I will try to post a couple pictures. The first will be a standard '37 that I have. Note the distance of the final drive just above the Farmall logo.

This next picture is of a '36 narrow that I just sold.

It doesn't have any logos on the back but notice in this area the rearend is about 6" narrower on each side.

Narrow tread refers to the spacing of the rear tires. My BN, for example has narrower rear tire spacing than a straight B. This was done to allow crop rows to be planted closer together and still have the rear wheels run between them while cultivating etc. Several models from several manufacturers have a narrow version usually denoted by the letter N folling the model name (like F-20N). Hope this helps. Dave.

I have a narrow tread F-20. My Grandfather farmed with 2 1938 Farmall F-20's in central Wisconsin (Stevens Point area) from in the 40's until my uncle quit farming in 1991. One, that was my grandfathers first, was the normal 1938 F-20 with rubber with the normal 4-speed forward transmission, 4th being the road-gear. the second was a project another uncle of mine bought. Just this last 1-1/2 years did we notice there's a difference in the two, besides the transmission. They've used these for years, and just this year we noted the differece needed to trailer one from the other because of the width, and the cultivators and a fabricated after-market saw rig will only fit on the normal width F-20,not the narrow tread,....you would notice no difference, until you get a ruler out. We did always know the transmission was very different,...4th gear only being less than 5 M.P.H.
