On the front end of an F-12 there is a piece that is tied into the steering mechanism with a long arm and a notch in the end of the arm. I understand this is to lock the steering in position when using a cultivator.

Just above this there is a piece that is aloud to rotate freely. It has a slot cut into it that looks like it will accept a carriage bolt head. What is that darn piece for, and how was it used.

Thanks

Dan

The "thingy" you refer to is just a brace to hold the steering mechanism for the cultivaters. The paddle below that turns with the steering wheel. The cultivaters have a latch that hooks into that paddle so when you turn they move to compensate for the arc of the tractor, allowing the cultivaters to stay centered in the corn row even when going around a corner. That latch can be disconnected when the cultivaters are in the up/transport position. A really hi-tech design for the early 30s.

This picture from a Texas tractor show should answer your question.

What a dummy I are. I responded and then went out with the pic and looked at my cultivator. When you do that it is real obvious.

The piece is to mount the steering lock mechanism and still be able to turn the tractor.

Thanks Mike H for the help.

Thanks for the pic, but I still don't see what it does.

When turning corners, this set-up would swing the cultivators in the opposite direction. As the nose of the tractor moved to the left or right, the cultivator shovels would move into the row damaging crop. This device kept the shovels centered over the row, throretically, until they passed the same spot in the row. Made them hard as heck to steer though.

Very interesting Dan. I have wondered about that for a long time. But what is that rotating paddle shaped piece about 2-3 inches directly below it for?
