I have tried the following to get the A running: cleaned fuel lines, sediment bowl, screen; there is good fuel flow. I did the spark test with the coil wire - no spark. The rotor spins when attempting to start, the points open and close but no spark. The condenser is new. I tried a jump wire from the positive batt terminal to the coil terminal (not the side going to the distributor) absolutely nothing happened. Bad Coil?? Any other suggestions??

Bill, Didn't you say you had another A ?
Switch the coil from that one !
In any event.....I think you have found your problem !

Hi Gary,

Yes. I do and thought of that, but it does not have the traditional igniton coil set up. It's a 1946. Anyway I did think of it but no go. Anyways looks like a new coil is going in.

Thanks

Gary,

I finally got the tractor running last night. I never did see any spark at the points and it was dark when I finished up. I noticed however that the points were closed even at cam high, I could not get the feeler guage in there. So I adjusted to .20 at cam high, still no spark observed, but it started up with a little sputtering and then ran well. Never did get the coil to spark on the engine block either. I tried jumping the ignition from pos batt terminal to coil negative, but nothing happened. O well , live and learn. Running for now!

Well Bill, at least you've got it running.
Many times, even if you make all these checks right, you can't seem to get the results you should..... one rule of thumb to follow when working with these ole 6 volt machines is "Clean, bright and tight"
Always keep all electrical connections in good shape and it will improve the starting ability.
I think another word of advice I would give you is...when you are working on an ignition problem always make sure your battery has a "full charge".
I learned this from an old ford that I have.
It wouldn't start but ran fine if I jump-started or coast-started it. I replaced the battery cables and cleaned all electrical connections and from that time on it would start within about 2 revolutions of the engine.

I'm glad you've got your machine running.....just think of all the fun you had ....smile!...not to mention the experience for "next time".

Gary

It sounds to me like you have gone about checking everthing that you need to check, It sounds like replacing the coil would be a good place to start.
