I bought a 1967 Farmall 706 Gas burner w/ a narrow front end this weekend. The front rims that are on the tractor now look tooooo wide to me, judging from the old archival photos I have seen of 706's. (I think they came off a later model tractor w/ a WFE. I saw the same wheel / tire combination today on a Farmall 666 WFE.) The current tires are 7.50-16's. I bought some 4.5" rims today, same as the 16" rims on my '65 424 International. My local tire dealer is trying to sell me 6.00-16's - I think that is one size too small. (I think I need at LEAST 6.50-16's.) My question is: What size tires and rims did the 706's come fro the factory with?

Mark my 756D had 6.50x16's on it when I bought it, I now have 9.50x15's on it. My 706D has 11.00x15's the bigger tires ride a lot easier.

Mark: This one always differs in some areas, all those 560, 656, 706 and 756 in my area came from factory with 7.50x16

Thanks for your help, Mr. MacKay. This tractor appears to have the original paint on it, and it has dealer stickers from somewhere in Ohio. These stickers are so old, I cannot make out much of the writing on them. Perhaps the 7.50-16's were put on tractors in colder climates? How this thing got to Northeast Georgia is anybody's guess. I saw it for sale at a towing company and bought it on my way to National Guard drill.

Mark: I think these tire sizes had a lot to do with the local dealer and how he ordered them in. One item we found in our area was the larger tires gave better floatation with front end loaders. The same would be true also of the mounted corn picker. The larger tires also rolled over obstacals easier. Many times especially with a front end loader under slipery conditions even something as high as 2" could stop you. The larger tires just rolled over these obstacals easier and as such was easier on whole tractor in general.

I was commercially farming when these tractors were built new and can remember there was a fair variety of tire options available. I think you could order them with everything from 6.00x16 to 7.50x16. Rear tires were same.

In the area where I grew up the soil was quite soft and unstable. Compared to the US mid west where soil is quite firm, we were calling for much wider front and rear tires long before the industry responded. Of course the other thing you must remember is probably 75% of the farm tractors were going to the US corn belt. The rest of us didn't matter a whole lot to them.

Well, then. I guess I will go back with the 7.50-16's, like what came on the tractor. I plan to use this tractor for plowing, especially to pull an offset harrow that is really too much for my 424 International or 350 Farmall Diesel. I will also be "Bush Hogging" (that's what we call it in the South, when we use rotary mowers) so I will be running over various obstacles. Every now and then, I will probably have to snake some logs out of the woods, or drag off a tree, too. I appreciate everyone's advice & input. I was a little boy in the 60's when these tractors were new, and my grandfather owned only a Farmall H and A - he was a cotton farmer. Now, if I can fix the fluid leak on the front end, I should be about ready to go after next week's engine rebuild.

Lots of farmers retrofitted their tractors with larger front tires to give the tractor a little more flotation, especially when it was used with a front end loader.
