I pulled the head off of this engine a few weeks ago, no reason other than a small amout of oil leaking out over the past 2 years. Not enought to worry about just thought that 30 year of age had something to do about it. I took the valves out cleaned them up, laped them back in, put new seals on the intake valves and cleaned the top of the block and the bottom of the head up with a wire brush on an angle grinder. Put it all back together using new gaskets, torqued the head bolts to specks in the correct order. Changed all of the fluids and started it up. Now there is a small about of water seaping out around the head. I did not check anything for flatness since I have not had any real problems out of it. Was there supposed to be some sealent used on the brass protions of the gasket where the water goes throught? I have never put any sealent on a head gasket before and the manual I have did not say anything about it.

I have not ran it more than about 20 minutes but this sepage bothers me. Any chance of it stopping or did I do something wrong? I am not a professional mechanic but I have rebuilt several engines and worked on more heads than I can remember over the years but this is my first time working on this engine.

Thanks for any input.

David, before you tear it back apart, I'd let it run for a while longer. When I put the head back on my 560, torqued it down, filled with water and came out the next morning it was seeping in 3 spots. 1 of the spots had actually ran down the block it was that bad. After I added another 5 ft/lbs. I ran it for 30 minutes or so and 2 of the 3 stopped. After running it again for another amount of time (don't remember how long), the other one stopped. I was very close to taking it all back off but letting it run for a while sealed it up. You might be surprised. Goodluck!

Updated torque is 80 ft lbs, not 65 as it says in the service manual.

Mine is showing 80-90 ft lbs for this engine #. I have retorqued the head and most of the leaks have stoped. I will run it and see what happens. Thanks.

Did you retorque the head again after you ran it enough to get it up to operating temperature? Head bolts sometimes loosen up with a heating/cooling cycle, might be all that it needs.

Would you retorque them while the engine is still hot or wait until it cools back down?

I've done it as soon as the engine is cool enough to work on without burning my hands on it. I think you have to remove the valve train and then reset the valve clearances in order to get at some of the head bolts on that engine.
I haven't worked on a 140, but I think they are the same as A's & B's in that respect.

I wouldn't put anything on the gasket. If it doesn't stop leaking after 30 or 40 minutes of continuous running(keep an eye on coolant) I'd yank it back off & have a good machinist check it for warpage. If it's warped, you can probably get it resurfaced for $30 or 40, put in a new head gasket, and be in business.

Thanks, that was my only thought also. I just wanted to make sure there was not somthing I was missing. Would it hurt to retorque the head bolts after it has ran for a while and then cooled down? Or at least check to see if they were still torqued down?

David: Not only would it "not hurt", but it's probably necessary. Most gaskets take a compressive set after a few hours (24 or so)and often need to be retorqued to bring them back to the proper compression level. This is especially true of head gaskets, which see a higher level of thermal cycling than most gaskets. I'd retorque, run it a while, and then do a final torque check. If you've still got problems, then pull the head and go from there.
