I've got a 4-row model 56. They are good plate planters. Very trouble-free operation.

56 was later verion of 455, not much different except decals, last of IH plate planters, they made 4/6 row, had 2 types of seed driving plate designs, hill drop or power hill drop. They were made at tillage & plow factory in Canton IL, long since closed. Planters 455/56 were made 1963/66 then 56 1966/72 in 2/4/6 row. 400 Cyclo air were first built 1971. They were built at East Moline.

I have to disagree with RPM. I have a 1980 I.H. buyers guide. The 56 planters are still in there. The early ones have steel fertilizer boxes. The later ones had fiberglass boxes. Also on the real late ones have square seed hoppers compared to the round ones on the earlier models. My 2cents.
