I have a problem.....
I have been working on one of my Farmall 140's today. When it runs, it smokes like a freight train, only the smoke is white. Im not exagerating when i say freight train, it engulfs the tractor and surrounding areas. It is so thick you cant see or breathe in the drivers seat. It smokes white at all engine speeds, the smoke gets thicker with an increase in RPM. It also blows an oily sludge from the manifold. it also gushes oil out of the dipstick like an Oil Refinery, seriously though, it will sputr about 6 inches out of the hole if you remove the stick.

What could be causing this, and is it easily fixed?

.....the EPA's going to love me.....

Greyson.

Actually, as it turns out, it was a stupid error. I now know that when you put 2 1/2 gallons of lift fluid in the wrong hole (I/E engine oil filler)the smoke turns white. Simple fix, though, drain the oil/hydraulic fluid mix, add the new oil, and it doesnt smoke anyomre.

Darn.... now i cant brag about my AmTrac...tor

If you are getting water in the pan then it will have a distinctive milky/creamy color and be pretty thick.

that volumn of white smoke means broken or scored piston, or failed piston rings. you are sucking oil into the combusion chamber and forcing exhaust thru the crankcase and out the vents and dipstick on the down stroke.

I had the same thing when someone put stove fuel in the tank instead of gas.
As far as water or antifreeze. In most cases I have seen, once the water burns out of the cylinder, the white smoke will stop. Take the radiator cap off. If there are a lot of bubbles and foam in the radiator, then you do have a problem.

Good Luck,

Start with the most likely cause. Bad head gasket. Pull the head and have a look. White smoke means that you are burning anti-freeze. The reason oil is coming from the fill pipe is that coolant is displacing the oil in the pan and pushing it out. By the way, you are not supposed to take the oil cap off when it is running. Put a new headgasket on, torque it properly and in the correct sequence and see what happens. You will also need to change your oil filter and oil as the stuff in there is now contaminated and no longer protecting your engine.

Broken or stuck oil control ring could cause this. Hole or crack in piston. Is the crankcase oil level proper- not too full?

You didn't by any chance put diesel fuel into the tank instead of gasoline did you?
