H or Super H?

After some seat time on a recently inherited tractor, I'm not convinced that it is a Super H like I was told. Haven't had the serial number checked yet, but what are the qualifications for being a super? The previous owner had it repainted many years ago - can't read the round decal on either side.

I realize this is quite elementary for many of you, but I appreciate it!

I have a photo of this specimen - without my own website, how do I post it?

Thanks
Eric

Don't laugh on the M decal statement. I went to an auction that had a regular old H that had M decals on it. With that said, anything is possible as far as a tractor having the wrong decals on it. It is my understanding that the regular H could be overhauled and overbored to match the super H engine. The super H engine could be overbored to match the 300. Whether or not that would justify upgrading the decals I guess would depend on the owner. Bottom line, you will just have to check out what you've got. I am a believer in staying with original decals, even if you do some upgrading in other areas of the tractor.

Another easy check. Super H has a larger carburator. The choke rod attaches to it next to the block, not on the outside of the carb as on the H. If it has the original hood, the emblem on the front says IH. As Rustyfarmall said the disk brakes are not a definite ID. They were an option on most H's, although they are not the same as Super H brakes, but the last few H's produced did have Super H brakes. The serial number prefix is SH as opposed to FBH.

If you can find the serial number, you can check it by clicking on the serial number spot on the left of the page.

Eric - A few quick SH spotting features: Disc brakes. C164 engine - look for "C164" cast in the upper right rear of the block. Date codes on the larger castings ending in X, Y or Z (corresponds to 1953, 53 and 54). Live hydraulics (battery under the seat). Note however many early Super H's (so called "Stage I" tractors) did NOT have live hydraulics and thus legitimately have the battery under the gas tank.

Presence of a Super H decal is pretty much meaningless. There's plenty of H's out there that were "converted" to Supers by the mere addition of that decal!

I have an example of an 'H' with a Super 'H' sticker. I really wish the seller would have put an 'M' sticker on it instead, I could have used the extra power.

A super MTA sticker would have been better, think of how useful the TA could be. (now where is that lever?)

The easiest identifier being the disc brakes.

Solid sheet metal drum means band brakes, cast iron housing with several bolts through it mean disc brakes.

That is not a sure thing either, I have a 1950 H with disc brakes.

Nothing is a sure thing, especially with all the modified tractors around.

But the first thing I look for on an H or M is the brakes. They give you the best indication the quickest.

My grandfather's M was rebuilt and repainted by an IH dealer about 1957. They put in the larger sleeve set and asked him if he wanted the Super M stickers since it was a Super M now. So the paint on it from the '50's has the Super stickers. Not to try to confuse an innocent buyer. But when I repaint it, I suppose I'll stay with the Super M identification, even though it is a real M, with band brakes.
