Most likely the light lead has been moved from the generator side of the ampmeter to the battery side. It's a matter of preference. Do you(or the person who wired it this way) want to read the current drawn by the battery or the total load drawn on the generator?

Just got SC but when I was a kid, we thought of amp meter telling us how much generator was putting out (as is the case with my JD).

George - Correctly wired the ammeter will indicate the flow of current into (charge) and out of (discharge) of the battery. And THAT is the info you really need in order to understand the health of your charing system!
