i recently had the injector pump on my 1967 farmall 656 reworked and the injectors rebuilt.(pocket book still hurts) naturaly someone turned the engine over while the injector pump was in the shop. lost the timing. called two different dealerships to ask them where to position the engine to re time it and got two different answers.
does any one know the correct timing mark or procedure to find it.
the engine is a D282 serialnumber 90905
tractor serial is 2450135U045717*

Scott there is also an adjustment on the timing gear take the front cover off to get to it. Once my Dad and I got the 460, 180 degrees out of time we had to pull it and it will run, but not good. Just a thought!! 460D , 656D same eng. different crank longer stroke on 656.

Yours times at 1 Degree before TDC , You can pull the no. 1 Glow plug or pull the valve cover and when the no.1 valves are both loose you are at TDC then you can watch your pointer.

Tractor Vet, I found an other way to tell if you are intime without pulling the valve cover. On the Roosamaster pumps there is a dot on the end of the drive shaft and on the D282 engines it is angling from right to left with the dot at the upper end.

Go to your local farm store and pick up the I&T Service Manual for the 656. They cost a little over $20, and it will describe the timing process in detail. There is a cover on the side of the clutch housing held on by two 1/4" bolts, the timing marks are on the flywheel, and you can use a prybar to turn the engine over by the flywheel ring gear. Don't try this without the manual, you need to know exactly how many degrees before or after TDC the engine needs to be, and you need to remove a cover from the side of the pump and line up two marks.

Scott: Your 656 timing marks should be on the front crank pulley. But now you have to find out whether it is on compression or exhaust. My first thoughts would be to remove number 1 glow plug. You will probably need to remove all of them to enable you to turn by hand and find out the stroke of number 1.

Another time, if I remember correctly most diesels have a pin you put through chassis into flywheel, when at top dead center so it can't be moved while disassembled.

thanks hugh the marks are on the front crank pully
and thats good to know about the pin there is a hole and i wondered what it was for good info for next time i have gotten the timing close enough to start the tractor but it required a large dose of either and it runs baddly, and the injector pump is rocked all the way over.
