A GORGEOUS FALL DAY, 70 DEGREES, BLUE SKY, I AM MOWING ABOUT 5 ACRES WITH MY SUPER A AND SICKLE BAR. ABOUT HALF-WAY DONE THE TRACTOR JUST STOPS. LIKE IT WAS OUT OF GAS. SO I CHECK THE FUEL TANK, NOT A PROBLEM, CHECKED ALL THE WIRING, ETC..IT HAS RUN BEAUTIFUL UP TILL NOW. TRYED CRANKING A FEW TIMES AND STARTER SPINS, SOUNDS LIKE IT WANTS TO GO, BUT WON'T TURN OVER. ANYONE GOT IDEAS ON WHAT TO CHECK? WHAT MIGHT BE WRONG??
THANKS

Bill when weak coils get hot they fail. In our shop we test by pouring cold water over the coil and trying a start..it often helps us identify coil problems..... Mike in Exeter Ontario

The fuel filter is attached to the carb fitting that the fuel line screws into, you have to remove the fitting. If it is the coil (may apply to condensor too, I don't know), when it cools off it may start and run for a while and then quit. Next time it quits, pull one of the plug wires and check for spark, or pull the coil wire out of the cap and check for spark. If it is the fuel tank itself, it may be as simple as taking a wire and running it into the fuel outlet. may only be a temporary fix, but it may run a long time too.

Two things to check, you could have a plugged fuel line/needle valve in carb or a shot coil or condensor. If there is good spark between the points rule out the coil usually. If it sounded as you said, that it wanted to go, check for fuel flow.

Farmer Bob, thanks! How do I check for spark between the points?? Also I don't think there is a fuel filter in these lines, so it's just a matter of checking the fuel line? and strainer bowl??
Thanks again.

Remove the distributor cap and rotor and crank the engine over watching for spark when the points open. Make sure they are gapped at .020" on high cam. If no spark suspect the coil or condensor. Replace the condensor first as it is cheaper than a coil. Keep trying until you have spark at the points.

On the fuel side, shut off the fuel under the tank and remove the fuel line at the sediment bowl and then remove the bowl by loosening the bail that holds the bowl in place. Open up the shut off valve that you closed. Should hold a can under there to catch the gas as it should run a good stream. Make sure the screen at the top of the bowl is clean. Next remove the other end of the fuel line from the carb. Blow through the line to clean any obstructions. Now remove the fitting that the carb end of the fuel line goes into. There may be a screen on the inside end of this fitting and it may be plugged up. If there and dirty, clean it out. It could also be inside the carb where the problem is. Try these other things first and then post back. Someone will surely respond with more hints to get you going.
