I just purchased a belt pulley drive unit for my MD. The unit is from an M. I can't seem to get it to fit. The side of the starter motor prevents that unit from being properly placed. The starter appears to be original. Is there a difference between units on the M and MD? Any advice on how to install? Thanks for any help.

Thanks guys! I guess I should have thought to loosen the starter bolts to get more room. I'll try that tonight.

You may have to loosen up the starter mounting bolts to shimmey things around. The belt pulley is a tight fit around the starter.

Troy, does your starter have an aftermarket reduction in it ? I recently took the transmission cover off & found out that someday if I need to do starter repair, I will have to take the belt pulley housing off first to remove the starter. If the reduction wasn't there, I wouldn't need to do anything but take the starter off.

The parts catalog does not show a difference between the belt pulley assembly for the M and the MD. It does show that there was a change though at serial number 19203, which is probably about when the first MDs came out. Maybe they had to change something for the MD. Housing number is 57402 DD for the early tractors and changed to 8709 DD at serial number 19203.
